BEHIND THE SCENES AT LEEDS COMPASSIONATE CITY AWARDS
A Personal & Professional Journey: An Interview with Shaid Mahmood by Harsha Patel, Managing Director of Doing Social.

Leeds aims to be a compassionate and welcoming city with a strong economy that tackles poverty and addresses inequality. But how did the idea of Leeds as “a compassionate city” come about?

Dr Shaid Mahmood is the Chief Officer of Communities at Leeds City Council and Chair of the Board of the Luminate Education Group headquartered in Leeds. He shares the council’s journey as it seeks to achieve their ambition of a compassionate city, as well as the story behind the compassionate city awards and how the city has responded to this aspiration.

Harsha asks Shaid about his formative years and early influences, to understand why communities and compassionate action matter to him on both personal and professional levels. She also asks him about the achievements, challenges, and limitations in developing a compassionate city, exploring how the council’s strategy of compassion has been affected by the pandemic. Finally, Harsha invites Shaid to share his own well-being practices and his top tips for self-care and self-compassion.

Whether you know Shaid or not, this promises to be an interesting discussion!
